1. Introduction
Annals relate historical facts and events year by year in chronological order. This chapter is intended to clarify specific characteristics of this source genre using the example of the so-called 'Augsburg Year-Books' (Annales Augustani)
On the manuscript
the Augsburg Year-Books have survived in only one composite manuscript erhalten, die sich heute in der Staatsbibliothek München befindet.
The manuscript covers the period 973 to 1104. On each page, a red title followed by the year reads Years of the Incarnation of the Lord.'Anni incarnationis domini'. The year count follows the years of incarnation.
Each page is written in two columns (lat. columna = pillar). The entire manuscript was written by one scribe. The hand can be identified as a Carolingian minuscule of the 12th century. It is written on parchment.
